Wij; Mark, Windel en Martijn hebben elkaar ontmoet in 2023 tijdens een open bluegrass-sessie. Wat begon als een vrijblijvende jam, groeide tot onze verassing uit tot iets bijzonders: onze stemmen mengden moeiteloos met elkaar, de snaarinstrumenten klikten en – voilà- een onverwachte muzikale vriendschap was geboren. Onder het motto “wat leuk is, krijgt vanzelf prioriteit” volgde al snel ons eerste optreden. De warme reacties voedden ons enthousiasme, en zo begon het muzikale avontuur van The Turnip Brothers. Hoewel we genetisch geen broers zijn, ontstaat er tijdens de samenzang op bijna magische wijze een gevoel van broederschap. Daarmee bouwen we graag voort op de traditie van klassieke harmonie-zingende “brother acts” uit de old-time- en bluegrass-muziek.
Denk aan artiesten als The Monroe Brothers, The Stanley Brothers, The Delmore Brothers, The Louvin Brothers en vele anderen die het geluid hebben gevormd dat ons enorm blijft inspireren.

De roots van bluegrass
Bluegrass ontstond uit de muzikale tradities die immigranten ooit meenamen naar Amerika. Onder vaak zware omstandigheden vonden mensen met uiteenlopende achtergronden verbinding via muziek. Ierse en Schotse ballads vermengden zich met blues en spirituals met Afrikaanse wortels, waardoor een rijke muzikale smeltkroes ontstond.
Rond 1930 ontwikkelde bluegrass zich tot een eigen muziekstijl. The Turnip Brothers volgen deze muziek van blad tot wortel—en voegen daar hun eigen bezielde en pure interpretatie aan toe.Bekijk en beluister onze video’s hieronder

We: Mark, Windel, and Martijn met each other in 2023 during an open bluegrass session. What started as a casual jam session grew into something special, much to our surprise: our voices blended effortlessly, the string instruments clicked, and voilà—an unexpected musical friendship was born. Under the motto “what's fun automatically becomes a priority,” our first performance soon followed. The warm reactions fueled our enthusiasm, and so began the musical adventure of The Turnip Brothers. Curious to see where this story goes? Although we are not genetically related, singing together creates an almost magical sense of brotherhood. We are happy to build on the tradition of classic harmony singing “brother acts” from old-time and bluegrass music.

Bluegrass originated from the musical traditions that immigrants once brought to America. Under often difficult circumstances, people from diverse backgrounds found connection through music. Irish and Scottish ballads mingled with blues and spirituals with African roots, creating a rich musical melting pot.
Around 1930, bluegrass developed into a musical style of its own. The Turnip Brothers follow this music from leaf to root—and add their own inspired and pure interpretation.Watch and listen to our videos above!
